One of the most influential film composers of the 20th century. He studied music at the Santa Cecilia Conservatory in Rome, where he learned to play the trumpet, among other things. He was first invited by Sergio Leone in 1964 to compose some of the interludes for his film A Fistful of Dollars. His work quickly gained attention because of his use of unconventional instruments such as the accordion, the bell, and the electric guitar. He received commissions one after another, and although he is primarily remembered as a composer of western films (one of his most famous scores was for Leone's 1968 film Once Upon a Time in the West), he also worked in a variety of other genres, from comedy to romance to horror.
