Fernando Gelbard is a central figure in Argentine jazz history, known for his pioneering use of electronic instruments and his genre-fusing approach. A pianist, flautist, and producer, he was among the first in Argentina to integrate electronics into jazz, creating music that blended tradition with the avant-garde. His 1974 album, Didi, performed entirely on Moog synthesizers and Fender Rhodes, exemplifies this vision, featuring a kaleidoscopic fusion of bebop harmonies, bossa nova, Latin grooves, and Afro-American rhythmic textures. Tracks like "Alevacolariea" with Rubén Rada highlight his interest in rhythm. Beyond his performance work, Gelbard founded the influential ION studios in Buenos Aires, which became a key hub for Argentine artists exploring new sounds. His musical journey, marked by collaborations with leading musicians such as Horacio “Chivo” Borraro, was interrupted by exile to the US following the 1976 military coup due to his father's political involvement.
