Edward Elgar gelang 1899 mit den Enigma-Variationen sein später Durchbruch und er festigte seinen Erfolg im Jahr darauf mit The Dream of Gerontius, einer Vertonung von Kardinal John Henry Newmans tief katholischer Meditation über Tod, Gericht und Leben nach dem Tod. Das Werk gilt als Elgars bestes Chorwerk und spiegelt seine komplexe Beziehung zum Glauben und zur Kirche wider. In der Aufnahme von den BBC Proms 2022 sind die Mezzosopranistin Jamie Barton und der Tenor Allan Clayton in der Titelrolle zu hören, ferner der Bass James Platt. London Philharmonic Choir und Hallé Choir sowie das London Philharmonic Orchestra musizieren unter Chefdirigent Edward Gardner.
