The album Extended Field is the eighteenth volume of RVNG Intl.'s FRKWYS series and features a collaboration between the band Horse Lords and avant-garde composer Arnold Dreyblatt. The central focus of the album is just intonation, an ancient tuning system based on whole-number ratios, which both artists explored independently. Dreyblatt, a former assistant to La Monte Young and student of Alvin Lucier, is known for his resonant string techniques that produce dense metallic overtones, the foundations of which were established in his 1982 album Nodal Excitation. Horse Lords, in contrast, have developed a fluid, rhythm-driven style blending minimalism, free jazz, and spectral experimentation, as heard on their 2020 release The Common Task. With Italian percussionist Andrea Belfi completing the ensemble, the collaboration resulted in a kinetic harmonic world and a unified system of vibrating tones and pulses, forming a vivid dialogue between different generations of experimental sound explorers.
