VA - Qobuz Playlist: Isle of Wight Festival 1970 (2024)

1970 was not the first year the Isle of Wight Festival took place, but it was certainly the most important. A year after Woodstock’s legendary standing in the United States, it was the small British island’s turn to make history. The third edition of this iconic 1960s counterculture event in Newport broke all attendance records with over 600,000 spectators and an eclectic line-up capable of envying any modern festival: Jimi Hendrix, Miles Davis, The Doors, The Who, Lighthouse, Ten Years After, Terry Reid, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Joni Mitchell, The Moody Blues, Melanie, Donovan, Gilberto Gil, Free, Chicago, Leonard Cohen, Jethro Tull, Joan Baez, Supertramp, Taste, Tiny Tim and many others... This unexpected turnout led Parliament to add an article to the Isle of Wight County Council Act 1971 prohibiting outdoor night-time gatherings of more than 5,000 people on the island without special permission from the council, sounding the death knell for the festival. It was not until 2002 that it reappeared under the name Rock Island, before returning as the Isle of Wight Festival from 2003 onwards.
