Although Mendelssohn's piano repertoire is best known for its many character pieces (first and foremost, of course, the Songs without Words), the composer also wrote several formal and educational pieces. The Preludes and Fugues are clearly inspired by Bach, whom Mendelssohn revered and worked hard to rediscover. The three études are posthumous but date from the same period, and some may have served as sketches or preparatory work for the opus 35. These pieces, brilliantly performed here by Daniel Adni, are available in digital format for the first time.
