Philippe Joseph Hinner (1755-1784) - long known only as Harp Master to Her Majesty the Queen of France - was much more than a court musician. His extraordinary biography and his elegant music provide a fascinating insight into the world of Marie Antoinette and the refined culture of pre-revolutionary France.

Born in Wetzlar as the son of a harpist, Hinner's life took him across continents at an early age: in 1764 he accompanied his father on an expedition to French Guiana, survived a tropical fever epidemic there and returned to France, where he completed his musical education thanks to the support of the knight Turgot. At the age of fourteen, he performed at the Concert Spirituel in Paris and impressed with his power, precision and understanding. in 1774, he received a position in the royal chapel of Louis XVI and soon after became harpist and valet de chambre to the young queen. In her company, he composed numerous subtle compositions - Romances and Airs tendres for voice and harp - intended for the elegant salons of Versailles and often dedicated to members of the royal family. The baptism of his daughter Louise Antoinette Laure (later known as Laure de Berny, Honoré de Balzac's muse) was even sponsored by the king and queen.

Between 1777 and 1780, Hinner undertook concert tours through Europe, celebrated as a virtuoso in Italy and London. After his return, he continued to enjoy royal favor until his life ended suddenly in 1784 - at the height of his fame. But his music remained: delicate, graceful and of that sensitive elegance that breathes the spirit of his era.
