William Sterndale Bennett's first three piano concertos emerged at intervals of one year each, in 1832, 1833 and 1834. Each of these was begun during his summer holidays and completed in the fall semester at the Royal Academy of Music. The first concert had such an effect that Bennett was invited to take it before King William IV. and Queen Adelaide in Windsor Castle. Following his habit of beginning the composition of a new piano concerto in the quieter summer months, Piano Concerto No. 4 was created in F minor, op. 19, in the summer of 1838. In July, Bennett wrote to both Mendelssohn and the concert director of the Gewandhaus that he had composed a new concert explicitly intended for performance at the Gewandhaus on his next visit to Germany. The premiere took place on September 26 in London in front of a small audience in RAM, with the slow movement being a remastered version of "A Stroll through the Meadows" originally composed for his earlier F minor concert (now referred to as Number 5).
