This is a modern jazz album that blends moments of free improvisation with electronic soundscapes. I feel the need to create this project because, after many experiences as a sideman, the time has come for me to present a work that fully represents me as a bandleader and composer.
The tracks on this album were all composed by me over the past few years: they are melodic, essential compositions with a strong identity. Each piece originates from a real experience: a book, a meaningful place, a person, a memory. I believe that each of these pieces carries a unique story to tell, and it is precisely this narrative dimension that makes the release of this album a particularly meaningful milestone in my artistic journey. The title of the album was inspired by my most recent trip to China with the trio, when we performed in Shanghai in March of this year. While there, I came across a Chinese word pronounced “Liubai.” It’s a term that can be applied to many fields, from painting to music, and even to everyday life. It represents the importance of leaving space for others, of listening to silence, of allowing emptiness to exist and to communicate, of letting the white space on a canvas become snow.
