Carmen Maki, born Maki Annette Lovelace on May 18, 1951, in Kamakura, Japan, is a singer known for her contributions to folk rock. She began her music career as a folk singer at age 17 with the release of "Toki ni wa Haha no Nai Ko no Yō ni" (Sometimes I Feel Like a Motherless Child) in February 1969, which sold over one million copies and earned her a spot at the 20th Kōhaku Uta Gassen. In 1970, Maki transitioned to rock music. She collaborated with Blues Creation for the album Carmen Maki/Blues Creation in August 1971. In 1972, she formed the rock band Carmen Maki & Oz, which released their self-titled debut album in January 1975, including the song "Watashi wa Kaze" and sold 100,000 copies. The band toured extensively before disbanding after an October 18, 1977 show at Tokyo Kōsei Nenkin Kaikan. Maki's solo career included the 1979 album Night Stalker, produced by Carmine Appice. She later formed the band Carmen Maki & Laff in 1980 and evolved it into the heavy metal band 5X, releasing several albums before disbanding in 1983.
