London-based retro-rockers the Karma Effect ply a tried-and-tested brand of bluesy, vintage-style hard rock & roll variously reminiscent of the Black Crowes, Aerosmith, and ZZ Top.
The Karma Effect was formed in 2020 in the small London commuter town of Oxted, Surrey, by a group of musically like-minded friends and acquaintances, most of whom had gone to school together. The band comprised Henry Gottelier (lead vocals & guitar), Robbie Blake (guitar), Seb Emmins (keyboards), Liam Quinn (bass), and Ash Powell (drums). Originally planned as an Americana outfit, it quickly morphed into a heavier affair. Recording their debut album during COVID-19, they collaborated remotely and got together whenever they could between lockdowns, finally self-releasing the eponymous album in 2022. It received glowing reviews in the rock press, with critics praising the maturity and sophistication of their sound, and was snapped up by fans of the "new wave of classic rock" epitomized by bands such as Rival Sons, Black Stone Cherry, the Temperance Movement, and Greta van Fleet. Steady touring with the likes of Massive Wagons and Scarlet Rebels solidified their position, and in 2023 they played no fewer than 11 music festivals including Winter's End and Steelhouse. Late that year the band signed with Earache Records, home to many other bands in a similar vein. The label released their sophomore album, Promised Land, in May 2024. ~ TiVo Staff
