Under the direction of the then chief conductor, the Tonkunstler Orchestra performed Gustav Mahler's monumental Eighth Symphony at the Musikverein Vienna in June 2025. Imagine that the universe begins to sound and resound. It is no longer human voices, but planets and suns orbiting: In his Eighth, Mahler reaches for the stars - no wonder it was initially billed as the Symphony of a Thousand at the premiere due to its large musical contingent. The Pentecostal hymn Veni, creator spiritus and the conclusion of Goethe's Faust II, written a thousand years later, are united by musically underpinned references to the overwhelming jubilant celebration of the creative par excellence. Together with a prominent group of soloists and splendid choirs, it was a monumental farewell for Yutaka Sado as chief conductor of the Tonkunstler Orchestra: Arigat-o gozaimasu - a thousand thanks!
With its five residencies at the Musikverein Vienna and in Lower Austria, the Tonkunstler Orchestra is one of Austria's largest and most important musical ambassadors. As an orchestra with almost 120 years of musical tradition, the Tonkunstler Orchestra, like the Vienna Philharmonic, performs on Viennese instruments. Gustav Mahler's biography is also closely linked to Vienna, where he worked as court opera director at the Vienna State Opera for ten years. He conducted the world premiere of his Eighth Symphony on September 12, 1910 - in Munich.
