The album A Djinn and a Hunter Went Walking is the result of a decade-long musical dialogue aimed at bridging two distinct Malian cultural traditions. The concept of pairing the balafon from the farming-oriented Kenedougou region with the hunter-centric instruments of the Wassoulou region originated during the recording sessions for Oumou Sangaré’s Seya. This project highlights a rare collaboration between instruments that, while geographically close, traditionally operate within separate social spheres and have seldom interacted in a formal musical context.
