Throughout his life, Nikolaus Harnoncourt pursued a singular mission: to relentlessly question the works of the past and their interpretation - not to restore some imagined "authenticity", but to bring them to life through the lens of our contemporary musical aspirations. This journey, which began in the 1950s by uncovering forgotten Baroque gems and offering radical new readings of celebrated masterpieces, spanned half a century. It culminated in an extraordinary evolution late in his career, as Harnoncourt took the podium of major symphonic orchestras to tackle the Great Romantic repertoire with equal success (notably his renditions of Dvořák’s symphonic works with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra). The Revolutionary Spirit pays tribute to the ambition and artistic integrity of a personality who shattered so many musical barriers.
