Friction Quartet - Proper Nostalgia (2026) [Hi-Res]

The album Proper Nostalgia by the Friction String Quartet was conceived as a work of studio art, inspired by the precedent set by Attacca Quartet's Real Life. The central idea was to liberate the ensemble from the constraints of acoustic performance and to fully harness studio production as an integral element of artistic expression. In 2021, against the backdrop of pandemic-era change, four composers — Andrew M. Rodriguez, Alex Dowling, Annika Sokolofsky, and Michi Wiancko — were given complete creative freedom, with the sole directive to treat the studio and production process as part of the composition itself. The project was later expanded to include a piece by Isaac Io Shankler, which incorporates encoded musical quotations and layered hidden meanings. The recordings were split between two studios — Skywalker Sound and Tiny Telephone — each imparting a distinct sonic identity to the works recorded there. The album's title derives from Rodriguez's eponymous composition: proper nostalgia denotes not a generalised wistfulness, but an intimate, almost secret inner world of personal memory and childhood freedom, which became the unifying image of the entire project.
