The Queen of Versailles is a Broadway musical based on Lauren Greenfield's acclaimed 2012 documentary, telling the true story of Jackie and David Siegel — a Florida billionaire couple whose ambition to build the largest private home in America collided head-on with the 2008 financial crisis. Jackie's journey from computer engineer to pageant queen to billionaire socialite forms the emotional backbone of the score, written by Academy Award winner Stephen Schwartz — his first new Broadway musical since Wicked.
The show blends sharp social satire with a surprisingly empathetic portrait of its protagonist, framed by sequences from the 18th-century French court of Versailles intercut with early-2000s Florida excess. Tony and Emmy winner Kristin Chenoweth stars as Jackie opposite Academy Award winner F. Murray Abraham as David Siegel, with the production directed by two-time Tony winner Michael Arden. The musical world-premiered in Boston in summer 2024 to sold-out houses before transferring to Broadway's St. James Theatre, where it ran from November 9 to December 21, 2025.
The Original Broadway Cast Recording, released by Sony Masterworks Broadway, features orchestrations by John Clancy and music direction by Mary-Mitchell Campbell. Lead singles "Caviar Dreams" and "Pretty Wins" were released ahead of the full album, which arrives on May 22, 2026. Critical reception was deeply divided: while most praised Chenoweth's performance as a career highlight, opinions on the score's cohesion and the book's dramatic focus varied widely, making the cast recording a significant document of a visually spectacular and contentious production.
