Nostalgia is a retrospective compilation released in 1972 on the Fania/Tico label during the final months of Tito Rodríguez's life — he would pass away in February 1973 — gathering the finest recordings he made for Tico Records across two distinct periods: 1949 to 1953, and 1956 to 1958. This was material from the golden age of mambo and cha-cha-cha, when Rodríguez regularly shared the stage with Tito Puente and Machito at New York's legendary Palladium Ballroom.Title: Nostalgia

Unlike the bolero compilations that defined "El Inolvidable" for most listeners, Nostalgia presents a different side of the artist — kinetic, rhythmically charged, oriented toward the upbeat formats of mambo and guaracha. The collection encompasses instrumental showpieces — "Mambo Manila," "Joe Lustig Mambo" — alongside spirited vocal tracks and sones performed with his orchestra. "Mambo Manila," composed by Rodríguez himself, pairs Afro-Cuban fire with a wistful, almost elegiac melody, while "Tremendo Cumbán" showcases his impeccably pitched voice against the sweeping big-band sound of the era.
Rodríguez was a rare breed of Afro-Caribbean performer — equally at home in romantic ballads and in the propulsive material that set the Palladium dancers in motion. It is precisely this overlooked dimension of his artistry that resonates most powerfully across the recordings assembled in Nostalgia. Having signed with Tico Records in 1949 and forced to rename his group from "Mambo Devils" to "Lobos del Mambo," Rodríguez spent two stints with the label producing 78 RPM singles, six ten-inch mambo volumes, and several full-length twelve-inch albums. That body of work was repeatedly recycled by Tico in various formats, but Nostalgia stands as its first systematic archival statement — an essential document of the era when Latin music conquered the New York dance floor.
