Promesse di marinaio is a musical comedy directed by Turi Vasile in 1958, starring Antonio Cifariello and Renato Salvatori — two of Italian cinema's most irresistible charmers of the era. Shot in Taranto in the soft hues of Ferraniacolor, the film forms a natural diptych with Vasile's earlier hit Classe di ferro, celebrating the carefree spirit of youth with an easygoing, joyful tone. Its greatest musical asset was the score by Lelio Luttazzi.
Luttazzi (27 April 1923 – 8 July 2010) was one of the most multifaceted figures in 20th-century Italian entertainment: composer, pianist, conductor, actor, and broadcaster. Often dubbed the "king of swing" in Italy, he was among the first composers to embed jazz structures into Italian popular song, blending American swing with Mediterranean melody and a signature dry wit. His deep admiration for Gershwin, Cole Porter, and Louis Armstrong shaped a style at once sophisticated and irresistibly accessible.
The 2026 Cam Sugar UME release brings together the complete musical material composed for the film: orchestral cues, scat improvisations, multiple instrumental variations on the central "Lullaby" theme (saxophone, piano, violin, full orchestra), and song numbers including "Spazza e ramazza," "Una promessa e niente più," and "Record Shop."
