Memories Of A White Magician: The 1981 Recordings (Year 2000 Remix) is the solo concept album by British musician Jon Symon, recorded in Hanover between 1978 and 1981 and originally released on vinyl in 1981. This digital edition presents the original recordings in a remix version completed by Symon himself around 2000, now issued as part of Cherry Red Records' catalogue reissue programme in 2026.
The album came together after Symon gained access to a recording studio owned by music publisher Michael Mellenthin. The session featured bassist Klaus-Peter Matziol, Eloy keyboardist Detlev Schmidtchen, violinist Hajo Hoffmann, and Epitaph drummer Jim McGillivray. A British national who had settled in Germany during the Krautrock era, Symon evolved from his one-man-band Rasputin project into the more ambitious Warlock concept — a thematic album designed with an eye toward eventual stage expansion as a rock ballet.
The seven tracks of the 1981 original form a self-contained, hermetically sealed tapestry suffused with occult imagery and progressive rock sensibility. "Pagan Memory" draws the listener into a cosmic expanse via choral chants, swirling keyboards and a propulsive rhythm section; "Spirits Of Hell" plunges into acid folk territory, its sinister echo, violin, flute and psychedelic guitar solo evoking comparisons to Comus. The closing "Into Eternity" seals the album's conceptual arc with fitting finality.
Where the 1983 re-recording expanded and revised the material with contributions from members of Jane, the 1981 prototype retains a focused, almost austere character that critics have consistently praised for its restraint. The "Year 2000 Remix" represents Symon's own late-career return to his most celebrated work — a reappraisal from across two decades, now made available to a wider audience through Cherry Red's ongoing archival efforts.
