M G Boulter - Fan Fiction (2026) [Hi-Res]

Fan Fiction is a five-track EP by Essex-based singer-songwriter M G Boulter, released on 30 June 2021 by Hudson Records (Sheffield) as a subscriber-exclusive through the Hudson Club. Recorded in 2018 at GBL East Studios in Canning Town, East London, the EP was produced by Dave Gerard, keyboardist of Elbow, who brings a layer of vintage keyboard texture to Boulter's characteristic acoustic folk arrangements. The sessions also featured Elbow drummer Alex Reeves, bassist Paul Ambrose, and backing vocalist Lizzy O'Connor.
The record extends Boulter's signature form of suburban storytelling: precise, novelistic vignettes drawn from the margins of Essex and East London life. The title itself functions both as self-deprecating irony and creative statement — the falling from a bridge, the night escape, the cat beneath the tree are all invented, yet as Boulter notes, "the sentiments and the smell of cookie dough could not be more real." The producer's use of vintage keyboards gives the recording a warm, atmospheric dimension that complements the intimacy of the acoustic performances. The closing track, "Southern Gothic," is the most cinematic of the five, transplanting the American Gothic tradition into an Essex setting with understated dramatic precision.
