The Habit is an album by Japanese musician Go Hirano, assembling recordings that span from the late 1980s through 2020. Hirano emerged in the Japanese underground of the 1990s, releasing three albums on the revered PSF Records label. His music, made at home and in the field, deliberately forgoes technical polish in favor of raw immediacy. The album employs a modest instrumentation — piano, pianica, percussion, and synthesizer — built around repetition, space, and resonance. Ambient sounds and the so-called imperfections of the recordings are treated not as flaws but as integral elements of artistic expression. While affinities with Ryuichi Sakamoto, Hiroshi Yoshimura, and Brian Eno are apparent, Hirano remains a distinctly individual voice, whose meditative musical language has been quietly evolving across decades.
