The album Illegal (1981) marked a turning point in Grobschnitt's history, as the band began to move away from the long symphonic suites of the 1970s toward the more energetic and compressed sound characteristic of the early 1980s.
The music became more aggressive and punchy, with elements of hard rock and even AOR (album-oriented rock). At the same time, it also reflects the influence of the emerging New Wave (NDW).
Despite the simplified structures, the band retained its signature instrumental interplay and use of synthesizers. The instrumental "Joker" is considered one of the most modern and powerful on the album.
In 2015, an expanded remastered version of the album (Illegal Remastered 2015) was released, including bonus live performances and rare recordings.
