The album "Matt White's Dolly" (scheduled for release on May 15) is a new project by trumpeter and composer Matt White, presenting a jazz and folk reimagining of Dolly Parton's early songs. The concept for the record originated after White discovered rhythmic similarities between Parton's early work and the traditional music of the Southern Gullah Geechee communities, a subject he has researched extensively. While strictly preserving the original lyrics and melodies, White's ensemble, featuring vocalist Liz Kelley, entirely reworked the musical frameworks of the compositions by incorporating elements of chamber music, gospel, and free improvisation. The project seamlessly synthesizes cultural-historical research of the American South with contemporary jazz artistry into a singular, deeply personal statement.
