Mitch Seidman has remained somewhat obscure despite over 20 years of professional experience, mostly in Boston. An excellent guitarist most influenced by Jim Hall and Jimmy Raney, on this CD he is heard in a trio with bassist Harvie Swartz and drummer Alan Dawson and, with the addition of Charlie Kohlhase on baritone and alto and Leonard Hochman on tenor and bass clarinet, in quartet/quintets. This well-paced set has plenty of memorable selections, including strong versions of Duke Ellington's "Going Up," "It Could Happen to You," and the intriguing calypso "Dyani." The interplay between Seidman, Swartz, and Dawson is consistently impressive, making this forward-thinking bop set well worth checking out.
