Vintage Summer Harmony (Remastered) draws together the essential recordings Buddy Holly made between 1957 and 1959 across the two Decca subsidiaries that jointly shaped his legacy: Brunswick (Crickets sides) and Coral (solo releases). All ten tracks were produced within barely two years — the same compressed span in which Holly effectively co-invented modern rock and roll. "That'll Be the Day" and "Oh Boy!" were recorded at Norman Petty's studio in Clovis, New Mexico, an unusually artist-friendly environment where sessions were billed per song rather than per hour, giving Holly and the Crickets the creative latitude to perfect their interlocking guitar-and-drums sound. "Listen to Me," "Rave On," "Valley of Tears" (a cover of the Fats Domino original), and "Heartbeat" appeared on the debut solo Coral LP Buddy Holly (February 1958); "Maybe Baby" came from the first Crickets album, The Chirping Crickets (November 1957).
Two tracks belong to the posthumous chapter of Holly's story. "Peggy Sue Got Married" and "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" were recorded by Holly alone, acoustic guitar in hand, in his New York apartment in December 1958, weeks before he died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959. Producer Jack Hansen overdubbed full studio accompaniment in June 1959, releasing them as Holly's first posthumous single. "Love Is Strange" — a cover of the 1956 Mickey & Sylvia hit — became Holly's final official single, issued in 1969 on the album Giant. The stereo remaster restores the open, room-filling quality of Petty's Clovis sound and the snap of Jerry Allison's drums, lending these recordings a renewed spatial clarity.
