The Art Of Darkness: Music For Film Vol. 1 is a comprehensive anthology of film and media compositions by New York-based composer and producer Raz Mesinai, gathering over forty cues written across various cinematic projects. Born in Jerusalem in 1973 and shaped by years moving between the Middle East and New York City, Mesinai absorbed both traditional Eastern musical traditions and the dub and hip-hop underground of the 1980s–90s. This dual heritage — alongside his role in establishing the illbient genre with Sub Dub — underpins his concept of "Score Design": the practice of conceptualizing and producing temp-score and underscore material for films with particularly demanding sonic needs.
The collection centers on Mesinai's work for the Israeli political thriller Incitement (2019, dir. Yaron Zilberman), represented here across three movements: Yigal's Theme, The Speech, and Credits. The film — winner of Israel's Ophir Award for Best Picture and the country's Oscar submission — dramatizes the radicalization of Yigal Amir, assassin of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. Beyond Incitement, the tracklist extends to other projects: the closing piece references Jonathan Demme's The Truth About Charlie (2002), while "Air Tones – The Fountain" echoes Mesinai's earlier collaboration with Darren Aronofsky.
