The new album The Art of Dying by Portuguese multi-instrumentalist André Mestre (performing under the alias Notwan) redefines the concept of death as a profound internal experience of loss, emotional ruin, and personal transformation. Shifting away from his previous experimental hip-hop releases, this record explores the artist's inner self through the lens of isolation and transition experienced between Portugal and Australia. The album marks a radical departure by placing sung vocals, reminiscent of David Sylvian, at the forefront, blending elements of spiritual jazz, ambient, glitch electronics, and languid R&B. The sonic landscapes range from digital chaos to minimalist synthesizer arrangements, exposing themes of vulnerability, heartbreak, depersonalization, and existential void. The closing track symbolizes both a farewell and a grounding anchor, ultimately turning metaphorical death from an end into a method of perception.
