Picastro - Double On Time (2026) [Hi-Res]

Led by Liz Hysen, the Toronto-based project Picastro is set to release the EP Double On Time via the We Are Bodies label. Over the past three decades, the project has evolved an idiosyncratic indie rock sound, consistently shifting its focus from stark minimalism to modular synthesis. The driving inspirations behind this new collection are the biography of boxer Sonny Liston and the pioneering work of composer Charles Ives.

Conceptually, the EP explores themes of humanity, historical erasure, and origins through the tragic life of Liston. Sound-wise, the release marks a departure for Picastro due to the integration of mangled samples, a technique Hysen developed during the pandemic. Utilizing fragments of Ives' compositions, the project crafts a tense, unstable sonic landscape rather than a conventional musical framework. These external citations are tightly controlled, ultimately reinforcing Picastro's distinct artistic identity.
