Surf Gang co-founder Eera comes correct on his first solo album, trading brittle cloud rap for squashed trance and tempered EDM and connecting with Mechatok, Nick León and CRUSH3d in the process.
If you didn't know by now, Surf Gang aren't your average rap production outfit. Evilgiane is regularly seen on underground festival bills, playing back-to-back with Evian Christ or palling around with Skrillex, while Harrison decided to go the atmospheric route on his solo debut 'Taking a walk & calling a car home', following his production on 'POMPEII // UTILITY' with a sequence of moody instrumentals. Cameron Kozloff, better known as Eera, takes a different route entirely, following the undercurrent of blown-out, saccharine dance music that's flourishing on YouTube, TikTok and Bandcamp if you're prepared to look beyond the anime artwork and videogame references.
Really, what Eera's isolated is that rap and contemporary trance have plenty in common - Araabmusik wasn't heading down a creative dead end when he released 'Electronic Dream' all those years ago. And 'Just Keep Holding On' sounds impressively plugged in; it's packed out with zeitgeist-y themes that might as well have been snatched from a PS2-era RPG (just check 'I Know' and prepare to weep) and features some unexpected guest appearances. León assists on 'Just Being Honest', a romantic, whimsical track that mutates into Daft Punk-like electro house and Berlin's Mechatok mucks in for lead single 'Sad But So Funny', a Robert Miles-alike piano-led banger.
