"Masters of Rock" is a best-of collection by the British glam rock/hard rock band The Quireboys (also known as The London Quireboys in the US), released in 2002 by EMI as part of the popular European budget compilation series of the same name.
Led by charismatic frontman Spike, the band became renowned for its rollicking, rocking sound in the spirit of classic British rock 'n' roll of the late 1960s and '70s.
This release is an excellent retrospective of the band's golden era – the late 1980s and early 1990s. The compilation is based on tracks from their iconic and commercially successful debut album, "A Bit of What You Fancy" (1990), which reached number two in the UK charts, as well as from their second album, "Bitter Sweet & Twisted" (1993).
The Quireboys' music on this disc is the quintessence of dirty, yet incredibly melodic, pub rock. The band's sound rests on three pillars: the raspy, smoky vocals of Spike (often compared to Rod Stewart and Sir Mick Jagger), playful boogie-woogie piano passages, and vibrant bluesy guitar riffs.
