Deep Purple - Bombay Calling (Live In '95) (2022)

Deep Purple's 2022 CD+ DVD release Bombay Calling features the "mach II" version of the group (singer Ian Gillan, bassist Roger Glover, keyboardist Jon Lord, and drummer Ian Paice), except for founding guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, who is replaced by former Kansas guitarist Steve Morse. Recorded in April of 1995, the group rips through 16 tracks in a very workman-like fashion (the unpredictability and tension that Blackmore brought to the proceedings has been smoothed over), mixing classics such as "Fireball" (whose beginning is overdubbed annoyingly with a group interview), "Black Knight," "Woman From Tokyo," "Space Trucking," "Highway Star," and "Smoke on the Water," along with "Perpendicular Waltz," a track that would surface a year later on the debut recording by the Morse version of Deep Purple, Purpendicular. Until a DVD comes along with live footage from the definitive Purple lineup of the early '70s, releases such as Bombay Calling will have to do.
