Deirdre Cartwright marks her long-awaited return with ORGANIK, her first album in fifteen years, demonstrating both her seasoned artistry and fresh creative vision. Recorded alongside acclaimed British organist Pete Whittaker and percussionist Gary Hammond, the project prioritizes authenticity and sonic minimalism. By rejecting electronic effects and plugging her Gibson guitar directly into a Fender amplifier, Cartwright achieves a warm, resonant tone perfectly complemented by classic Hammond organ textures and imaginative percussion work.
The album skillfully navigates between reimagined classics—notably the iconic "Eleanor Rigby"—and original compositions, including tributes to celebrated musicians such as Emily Remler. The material fluently moves through swing, Latin, and blues-inflected styles, anchored by strong trio interplay. Whittaker, an experienced hardbop musician who has collaborated with Art Themen and John Etheridge, brings technical mastery, while Gary Hammond, who has performed with Nina Simone and The Beautiful South, contributes rhythmic inventiveness and distinctive colour.
