"Hull Suite Live" is a live album featuring Zoe Rahman on piano, accompanied by experienced session musicians drummer Gene Calderazzo and bassist Alec Dankworth, both of whom have collaborated with jazz legends. The music blends blues influences, soulful melodies, and cinematic atmospheric layers, creating a multifaceted sonic landscape. Recorded at London's The Vortex jazz club, the album was commissioned by Hull Jazz Festival for World Piano Day 2024.
The album's core concept revolves around themes of journey, migration, and familial connection. The compositions are inspired by two monuments in Hull: one commemorating the millions of people who emigrated through Hull's port in the 19th and 20th centuries, and another symbolizing maritime trade between England and Iceland. Beyond historical context, Zoe incorporates a deeply personal element—her own parents experienced migration by sea, meeting in Australia. Notably, Zoe's mother sacrificed her piano to financially support her father's return to Australia after he visited his native Bangladesh. This piano story, serving as a symbol of sacrifice for love and family unity, becomes the metaphor threading through the entire album.
Zoe Rahman's musical language is characterized by an orchestral approach to acoustic piano, featuring rich chords that create depth and emotional resonance. The live recording at Vortex Jazz Club captures the authentic energy of the performance, where the trio's unity reaches its peak of expressiveness. The album represents a synthesis of historical narrative, personal history, and superior musical craftsmanship, creating a significant work of jazz art.
