Solex - Pick Up (1999)

Solex showcases mastery in electronic collage on the album "Pick Up," transforming forgotten vinyl discoveries into sophisticated musical pieces. Elisabeth Esselink's second work demonstrates greater ambition and complexity than her debut "Solex Vs. the Hitmeister." Her distinctive style is characterized by radical pluralism: within a single composition, wind instruments coexist peacefully with guitar improvisations, orchestral arrangements, and fractured rhythms. Despite initial complexity upon listening, the album unfolds as a coherent whole thanks to Esselink's delicate, almost absent-minded vocals and her unbridled creative energy. The poetic unity of each miniature stems not from genre uniformity, but from her personal artistic vision, which transforms klezmer and calypso, swing and trip-hop into organic hybrids. "Pick Up" embodies a synthesis of the sample-based culture of electronic music and the DIY aesthetic of punk and indie rock, creating a paradoxical universe where there are no boundaries between serious and amusing, beautiful and strange.
