Vancouver band Mock Media, originally from Vernon, have released their third studio album, Rat Bastard, which crystallizes their signature approach: blending a wide range of influences into something that resembles none of them individually. Their first two records already ranged freely across post-punk, Afrobeat, and classic rock, and this new album doesn't narrow that scope — it pushes it further, resulting in the most cohesive record of their career so far.
Opening track "Mock City Rock" sets an energetic tone right away, with chiming guitars, barked vocal unison, and a bass line worthy of Tina Weymouth of Talking Heads. The title track sounds as if Parquet Courts suddenly got into power-pop, while "City's on Fire" imagines a meeting between The Clash and 10cc. None of these reference points come across as pastiche or mockery — instead they combine into a multifaceted, danceable sound.
With Rat Bastard, Mock Media cement their place as one of the most promising new bands in indie rock — precisely because they refused to be confined to any single genre.
