Joyful Noise Recordings has launched the Sound Sanctuary, a collective of plants including a money tree and four rubber trees that act as composers. By attaching electrodes to their leaves, the project converts electrical conductivity changes from photosynthesis into MIDI data to create music. This initiative serves as a radical response to the rise of AI-generated content by prioritizing organic, interspecies collaboration. Throughout the year, the Sound Sanctuary will release four albums featuring collaborations with artists such as Deerhoof, Kishi Bashi, JD Pinkus, and Yoni Wolf. These sessions showcase varying human interactions with consciousness in nature, ranging from mystical communion to rhythmic engagement and philosophical reflection on human-plant interdependence. Housed in a custom vessel built by Thor Harris at the label's Indianapolis headquarters, the project invites listeners to question the nature of creative authorship. Through this experiment, founder Karl Hofstetter hopes to spark further scientific exploration into the musical potential and biological rhythms of the organic world.
