In 1969, Italian director Salvatore Samperi released Cuore di mamma ("Mother's Heart"), one of the boldest statements of the Italian New Wave as the turbulent decade drew to a close. At the center of the story is Lorenza, a bourgeois woman whose life has been reduced to the passive role of wife and mother within a dysfunctional, toxic household. Her precocious and violent eldest son methodically dismantles the family's already fragile balance, subjecting his mother to humiliation and psychological abuse. Under this pressure, a rupture occurs: Lorenza's emotional exhaustion turns into a deliberate act of rebellion — against domestic tyranny and against the bourgeois order that produced it. The film does not shy away from shocking its audience and remains closely attuned to the spirit of revolt and radical rethinking of family and society that defined Italy at the end of the 1960s. The film's atmosphere — the unstable line between childlike innocence, hidden irony, and mounting psychological tension — is shaped by the music of Ennio Morricone, a composer whose name became synonymous with the art of film.
