Jugalbandi Trio - Brindiban (2006)

The ensemble Jugalbandi trio bridges Indian Classical Music and jazz. Comprising an Indian percussionist, a jazz pianist, and a flutist with extensive experience in Eastern musical traditions, the group integrates piano harmony into Eastern soundscapes to present a fresh interpretation of classical Indian art. Their repertoire relies on concise North Indian themes that serve as launchpads for collective live improvisation.

Rooted in the ancient Vedas, Indian classical music centers on the system of ragas—complex modal structures that dictate not only pitch organization but also mood, emotion, and designated times of performance. While traditional performances feature a single soloist accompanied by a percussionist, the term "jugalbandi" refers to a rare duet interaction between two lead musicians. The trio adapts this traditional concept for a cross-cultural dialogue, preserving the essence of the ancient art form while enhancing it with Western jazz vocabulary.
