Paul Janoschka - TRIO (2026) [Hi-Res]

A debut album often serves as a calling card, but TRIO feels more like the confident statement of a pianist who has already spent years refining his musical identity. German pianist and composer Paul Janoschka may be releasing his first album as a leader. Yet, the assuredness of both the writing and the performances suggests an artist who knows exactly where he wants to go.

Janoschka’s journey has been anything but conventional. Raised in southwest Germany, he absorbed classical piano from an early age under the guidance of his father before immersing himself equally in jazz improvisation and the beat-making culture of 1990s hip-hop. Those influences were further developed through studies in Mannheim and later at New York’s City College, where mentors including Fred Hersch and Kevin Hays helped refine his already distinctive voice. Rather than sounding like a collision of styles, these experiences combine naturally into a language that is melodic, rhythmically alert and refreshingly contemporary.

His partners are perfectly chosen. Chilean-born bassist Simón Willson, now an established figure on the New York jazz scene through work with artists including Miguel Zenón and Ben Wendel, brings a wonderfully warm, articulate sound and an instinctive melodic presence. Drummer Jonas Esser, a long-time musical companion of Janoschka since their Mannheim days, provides the ideal balance of subtlety, groove and propulsion. The chemistry between the three musicians is immediately apparent, the result of years spent performing, travelling and learning together.

Recorded in a single day, TRIO has the freshness and spontaneity that only well-established ensembles can usually achieve. Janoschka’s compositions provide plenty of structure without ever sounding overworked. “Edits” is a fascinating opener, full of shifting rhythmic ideas and elegant counterpoint, while “Some Wasabi” introduces a playful energy that reflects the trio’s willingness to stretch and react in real time. The reflective “101 West 85th Street”, inspired by Janoschka’s modest New York apartment during the pandemic, is among the album’s emotional highlights, contrasting beautifully with the infectious momentum of pieces such as “CMD” and “Jonas & Sofia”. The brief closing “Outro” affectionately nods towards his early love of hip-hop production, ending the album on an unexpectedly understated note.

Throughout the recording, there is an admirable refusal to overplay. Each musician contributes to the collective narrative rather than seeking the spotlight, allowing melody, rhythm and interaction to remain the primary focus.

TRIO is a strong, inventive piano trio album that successfully bridges European lyricism, New York sophistication and contemporary groove. It introduces Paul Janoschka as a composer and improviser of genuine promise, while confirming that this trio is far more than a one-off studio collaboration. One suspects there is much more to come from these three musicians.
