Various Artists - My Heart is Dust Before Him: 21st Century Gasba from Algeria (2026) [Hi-Res]

The UK independent record label Hive Mind, in collaboration with the Oran-based production house Édition Ahlem—founded in 1992 by Abdelkader Haci (Abdelkader Haci)—has released the compilation "MY HEART IS DUST BEFORE HIM: 21st Century Gasba from Algeria." The collection documents the evolution of traditional Algerian gasba music (gasba music) and its intersection with the contemporary raï (raï) genre.

The core of this tradition revolves around the gasba (gasba), an ancient reed flute historically rooted in Bedouin rituals, saint festivals, and trance ceremonies. Originating in the port city of Oran during the late colonial era, gasba (gasba) melodies and guellal drum rhythms formed the foundation of raï (raï)—a working-class genre articulating themes of migration, poverty, and social dissent. Through the 1980s and 1990s, despite political censorship, raï (raï) expanded into a prominent youth movement driven by local cassette production.

The 21st-century recordings gathered in this compilation demonstrate a fusion of rural Bedouin folk forms with modern digital aesthetics. The traditional gasba (gasba) flute interacts with auto-tuned vocals from Cheikhs and Cheikhas, home-keyboard synthesis, drum machines, electronics (electronics), and R&B (RnB) production, recasting archaic ceremonial traditions into contemporary urban soul music (soul music).
