Musician and visual artist Maryam Turkey, who immigrated from Iraq to the United States during her childhood, releases her debut album ‘Hiragt El Rouh’ via Otherly Love. The record represents a reimagining of Iraqi, Egyptian, and Lebanese folk traditions through the lens of diaspora experience and Western culture. The album's sonic landscape, crafted in Los Angeles alongside producers Benjamin Lazar Davis and Will Graefe, as well as musicians Kenny Wollesen and Benny Bock, weaves together hypnotic guitar arrangements, modern electronics, and traditional Middle Eastern instrumentation like the qanun and tabla. Stepping away from ornate traditional Arabic vocal melismas, Turkey delivers an accessible Arabic folk fusion that explores themes of forbidden love, grief, and the search for identity while existing between two distinct cultural worlds.
