Inuit - 55 historical recordings / traditional music from Greenland (1905-1987) (2000)

The archival collection 55 Historical Recordings, compiled by Danish ethnomusicologist Michael Hauser for the book Traditional Greenlandic Music and released via ULO and Sub Rosa, serves as a chronicle of Greenlandic vocal and percussive folklore. Spanning from 1905 to 1987, the release incorporates early field recordings captured on wax cylinders by British ethnologist William Thalbitzer, documenting the heritage of Inuit drum-songs (inngerutit). The musical material relies on solo vocal delivery accompanied by a caribou-skin drum, functioning both as everyday storytelling covering seal hunting and boat building, and as ritual performance ranging from shamanic tales to duel-songs. Despite its minimalist execution and raw percussive timbre, the inngerutit tradition maintains strict structural continuity, preserving specific compositions without alteration across multiple decades.
