Recorded by Alan Lomax and his crew in May 1982 during fieldwork for the American Patchwork project, this album captures the Mardi Gras Indian tribe The White Eagles at Darrell's Lounge in New Orleans' 7th Ward.

Led by Big Chief Jake Millon, the release documents intimate rehearsal sessions focused on traditional call-and-response chanting, layered hand percussion, and Afro-Caribbean rhythmic patterns native to New Orleans street culture. The performances were captured in their natural community setting rather than a commercial studio.

Restored from original source tapes by mastering engineer Jessica Thompson, this 2026 digital release via Lomax Archive and Qobuz marks the first time these standalone field audio recordings have been made commercially available.
