Bob Wills, His Texas Playboys - The King Of Western Swing: 1944-48 (2026)

Between 1944 and 1948, Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys went through the most turbulent and productive stretch of their career. Bandleader Bob Wills reimagined the very foundations of American popular music, fusing urban big-band swing, blues, boogie-woogie, and cowboy folk into a single style that became pure Americana. After the war he moved his orchestra to California, where he played to huge crowds of defense-industry workers. The lineup became leaner and more modern, built around electric string instruments and a syncopated, danceable beat. Beside Wills sang his longtime partner Tommy Duncan, whose voice was clean and tinged with jazz, while world-class virtuosos filled out the band. The recordings of those years are marked by an uninhibited energy that ran about a decade ahead of the industry, and the group was a steady presence on the Billboard charts. The material ranges widely: from the roaring instrumental “Texas Playboy Rag,” through the smooth pop ballad “Sugar Moon,” to the earthy honky-tonk of “Bubbles in My Beer.” These recordings are still regarded as a model of genre synthesis and a cornerstone of roots music history, and Wills is remembered as the King of Western Swing.
