Hearing Pappano conduct his first live Turandot at Covent Garden on 10th March (not using the Alfano ending - so ala Toscanini, as everyone pretty much does) makes one wonder of the wisdom of casting Kaufmann, not a natural Calaf (though I love his burnished tone).

Yonghoon Lee - just a magnificent Calaf - why has no-one recorded him? Best around today.

Pappano probably the greatest conductor of the score - as in this recording, too, since Karajan.

Need both, I think... just because Karajan has no rivals for the orchestral part. He just cast the worst Turandot on disc.

At his early years, Leonhardt ALSO played gamba. He even recorded some Brandemburg concertos with gamba, conducted by another pianeer, Josef Mertin, in which harnoncourt plays cello, Melkus plays violin and Leonhardt plays GAMBA.

Obviously, he does not play gamba in this recorded reissued by Fra Bernardo, but just wanted to make it clear that Leonhardt also played gamba in his early years on period instruments.
