The soundtrack to Maverick doesn't feature Randy Newman's original score -- it is a collection of ten contemporary country numbers, with a Newman song and a version of "Amazing Grace" thrown in for good measure. Though the album features many big stars -- including Waylon Jennings, Clint Black, Vince Gill, Tracy Lawrence, Restless Heart and John Michael Montgomery -- it doesn't have many terrific performances. Many of these songs sound like cast-offs and throwaways, and while there are a handful of good cuts (Black's "A Good Run of Bad Luck" is particularly fine), the album is by and large a mediocre collection.
