Python Lee Jackson's history is confusing on several counts. They're known principally for one big hit that featured a superstar (Rod Stewart) on lead vocals, yet he was never even in the band. Not only were Python Lee Jackson a band and not an individual, there was no one actually named Python Lee Jackson in the group. And though they were based in the U.K. when they recorded their hit "In a Broken Dream" with Rod Stewart on vocals as a session singer, they were actually an Australian band.
They were one of the most popular live Sydney bands of the 60s beat era and their debut single, "Emergency Ward," was as a backup group for Sydney DJ/singer Ward Austin in 1966. The band re-grouped in London in 1968 where they recorded their now legendary In A Broken Dream LP which featured Rod Stewart singing vocals on three tracks with the title tune becoming a worldwide hit in the early 70s.
This release contains most of their recorded works (including 11 unreleased tracks) - despite best efforts, the three tracks from the original In A Broken Dream LP with Rod Stewart on vocals could not be secured for this compilation due to licensing issues. As a consolation, a new version of the famous track recorded in 2008 has been included as well as the debut single as a bonus.
