Mozart made full use of the woodwind instruments in these two "big" concertos, and the wind players of the English Chamber Orchestra are up to the task. Mozart only used clarinets in three of his piano concertos, and these are two of them. Especially in the E flat concerto, the clarinets really stand out. The awesome middle movement of this concerto breaks into a virtual serenade for the wind players, with an absolutely eloquent interplay between the bassoon and flute. Murray Perahia, as always, plays with great poetic feeling. The brooding C minor concerto also has wonderful woodwind writing and the ECO and Perahia are in top form. Highly recommended!
