British pianist Jonathan Plowright was raised in Yorkshire, and he attended Stonyhurst College in Lancashire. He studied piano with Alexander Kelly at the Royal College of Music in London, where he earned the gold medal. He also won the gold medal of the Royal Overseas League Competition. The recipient of a Fulbright Scholarship, Plowright continued his studies with Julio Esteban at the Peabody Conservatory. He gave his first recital at Carnegie Hall in 1984, and he made his British debut at Wigmore Hall the following year. Since then, he has performed with many major orchestras, including the London Philharmonic Orchestra, The Hallé, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Concert Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Odessa Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra. He has appeared with many chamber ensembles, such as the Brodsky Quartet, the Szymanowski Quartet, the Coull Quartet, and the Scottish Ensemble, and he has performed with many prominent musicians, including Piers Lane, Artur Pizarro, Frederic Chiu, Leslie Howard, Kathryn Stott, and Raphael Wallfisch. Plowright has recorded extensively on Hyperion and BIS. He has specialized in the music of the Polish Romantics, and he has recorded neglected works by Paderewski, Stojowski, Zelenski, Zarzycki, and Rózycki, as well as standard repertoire by Chopin and Brahms. Plowright is also a professor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, and serves as the head of keyboard studies at the University of Chichester.
