Philippe Herreweghe - Mendelssohn: Paulus (2016)

Mendelssohn composed only two oratorios, but both Paulus and Elijah are probably the greatest examples of the form in Romantic music. Phillippe Herreweghe's performance of Paulus avoids the excessive weight and sentimantality of some modern renditions and restores the work's extraordinary dramatic power. Originally released in 1996, this exceptional recording is available once more as part of harmonia mundi's Heritage series.
